Montauk Jet Lag Journal
Montauk, NY is one of the few places in the Hamptons with plentiful hotels and inns. Life in the Hamptons very much revolves around renting or owning a house, not popping by for the weekend. But Montauk is very handy that way – renovated, beautiful hotels filled with young people from the city are available if you have the cash. (And whewww, staying for a weekend in the summer is a small fortune.) Sunshine, lobster rolls, surfing and day drinking are all on offer here.
I stayed in a little beach cottage with a group of girls at the Panoramic View resort. Once we basically rolled down a cliff toward the water’s edge, we reached the cottage. In the mornings, the great big living room window showed off the beach view, and we made a pot of coffee, and wandered straight onto the sand. What a treat – to walk straight on the beach with a coffee, not even in a paper cup, but a real actual mug! Aaahhhh, life is good in Montauk.
Restaurants here are fabulous, especially for seafood and lobster lovers. A list of favorites:
Joni’s Kitchen to pick up breakfast
South Edison for oysters and growlers of beer in the late afternoon straight from the beach
Ruschmeyer’s for dinner when you want to pretend you’re a kid at camp
The Harbor for a great raw bar and live jazz on the water
Gurney’s for some frozen fruit salad with honey when you’re broiling on the sand
We spent a great evening watching the sunset and drinking champs on a sailboat that cruised along the Montauk coastline. The captain built this boat himself over the course of ten months. It arrived to him as sheets of canvas and strips of wood, and is now a beautiful seafaring catamaran.
More to come on Montauk later this summer from my A+S other half!
